Vintage Motorcycle Days 2003

July 18-20, 2003

Mid-Ohio Track, Lexington, Ohio

On a Friday I loaded a 1966 BMW R27 in the truck and drove to Vintage Motorcycle Days, held at the Mid-Ohio Racetrack near Lexington, Ohio, about half-way between Columbus and Cleveland. The trip was about 275 miles up I-71 across flat farmland relieved only by crossing the valley of the Little Miami River.

The campground stretched to the horizon in all directions. It was a dense sea of tents, campers, trailers, trucks and motorcycles. There were ample portable toilets, as well as a semi-trailer of regular toilets and a semi-trailer of hot showers. I spent most of the time hanging out at the tent of the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Owners (VBMWMO).
Although I had not come to watch the races, the course wound around the infield where the vintage shows were held. I caught a glimpse of some early 1970's BMW airheads holding their own on the track.
I entered my R27 in the Ride'Em Don't Hide'Em vintage show, which required a 50-mile ride through the countryside with a pit stop for refreshments at a park. 1st Place in my European division was taken by the BMW R90S parked next to me at the right.
2nd and 3rd Place were won by a red MV Agusta 850 SS and a green-and-red Moto Guzzi

Against such flashy competition, the R27 was lucky to get Honorable Mention.
